NEWS: International Tea Importers (ITI) and Young Mountain Tea offer India Tea Tour with Nigel Melican as Lead Instructor

Now in its third year the India Tea Tour is open for registration. Designed for tea professionals, participants will complete an intensive and comprehensive field study of the Indian tea trade under the guidance of renowned tea sage Nigel Melican. Given the success of last year’s trip, spots are likely to fill.

The curriculum is developed and taught by Melican, who has over 39 years of hands-on practical experience in the tea industry and received the 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award from the World Tea Awards. Melican shared that “the real value of getting out there and experiencing tea where it actually grows is that all those things you have read about come together and make sense – it’s the way I learned and now I am passionate about introducing others to that experience.”

The trip runs May 1-16 and participants will study tea in India’s major tea growing regions including the Nilgiris, Darjeeling, and Kolkata. Educational content will be delivered through lectures, quizzes, site visits, hands-on workshops and experiential learning in both field and factory. Topics include cultivation, production, cupping, evaluation, and biochemistry to name a few. The course culminates with a final exam and certificate of completion.

Previous participants say that the most valuable part of their experience was traveling with Melican, who makes himself available outside of designated class times for more questions and discussion. Past participant Danielle Hochstetter said her favorite part was having Melican as the lead instructor. She noted that he is “someone who has worked around the world, and is still patient, knowledgeable, and could simplify the science in ways we could understand.”

Participants have the option of extending the trip to Kumaon - India’s revitalized tea growing region - May 17-22. Participants will witness the grassroots efforts to revitalize this underdeveloped tea region and meet the people essential to its growth.

Both the primary trip and the extension will be led by Young Mountain Tea’s founder Raj Vable who has been organizing and leading trips to India and Nepal for 5 years.

Prices start at $5,200, which includes all in-country expenses: accommodations, food, domestic travel, and any activities. The price does not include international airfare, visas or immunizations. Participants can secure their spot with a $500 non-refundable deposit.
