BLOG: Nepal Tea – On Top of the World by Gail Gastelu, The Tea House Times

By now you must know that I have been away for a magical trip to Nepal to experience what is truly unique about the tea grown there while at the same time attending their 3rd International Tea Festival in Kathmandu.  Read my previous post to learn more:

BLOG: Going to NEPAL for the Third International Tea Festival – April, 2018 in Kathmandu – by Gail Gastelu, The Tea House Times

This year’s festival comes 12 years after the 2nd festival in 2006, the first having taken place in 2001. The focus of the 3rd Festival was to introduce a new branding logo for NEPAL TEA.

In coming weeks and months, I will be publishing many educational pieces to help you to understand what is different about tea from Nepal, why it is unique, what organizations to contact for buying direct, and much more.  For now, please enjoy a quick recap of my trip.

Day 1 – April 6, 2018 - Tea Tasting Ceremony at Mount Everest Base Camp area

On this day the tea delegation consisting of myself as media presence and important buyers from around the world were taken by military helicopter to Mt. Everest Base Camp area. Luckily, the weather cooperated and although it was quite chilly that morning and the air a bit thin so high up in elevation, the day was absolutely magical and certainly left everyone feeling “Top of the World.”

We tasted a variety of very good, delicious teas of Nepal with the backdrop of those beautiful, snow peaked mountains.  I really cannot believe I was there and the photos look much too wonderful to be real.

A logo launching ceremony took place later on this day at the Hotel Yak & Yeti in Kathmandu.  It was a beautiful venue with plenty of first class conference facilities and fantastic hotel where I laid my head to rest for the first few days.   This first evening included many important speeches by key government and tea industry officials followed by remarks by foreign delegates.  A gala dinner and cultural entertainment finished off a perfect first day in Nepal.

Day 2 – April 7, 2018 – International Tea Conference

Full day of speakers from Nepal and internationally focusing on “Creating Sustainable Production and Markets of Nepal Tea”  Of course this included discussions around quality, some facts and figures, and plans for further branding and marketing of Nepal Tea around the world. This day ended with an incredible 12 course meal at Krishnarpan in Dwarika’s Hotel, Kathmandu.

Day 3 – April 8, 2018 – Closing Ceremonies and Valley Heritage Tour + Gala Dinner

Self-explanatory.  View The Tea House Times photo album for April 8 on Facebook here.

Day 4, 5, 6 – April 9-11, 2018 – Flight to Bhadrapur airport and travel to Ilam via a caravan of SUVs to visit tea gardens, factories, meetings with tea producers, tastings, and more. And return to Kathmandu after.

This trip to Nepal has left me floating on clouds. I was well taken care of and feel quite honored to have been invited.  As many of you have already told me, I really looked happy! Of course I was because tea, yes – T E A – makes me happy and trips such as this and my two trips to Sri Lanka last year have been life-changing for me as a person.  I am forever touched by the beauty, love, and care of so many people. This is a very special and beautiful industry to be part of and whether you are reading this post as a tea business or a consumer, I am sure you agree how tea can touch your life be it through bringing people together or from the sheer enjoyment it brings in a moment of delicious calm, or time with others.

Stay tuned to learn more about Nepal.  Find an article in the May/June issue of The Tea House Times and look for more of my work coming out in Tea & Coffee Trade Journal soon and other publications in the near future.  I have a lot of things to catch up on, so this will be an ongoing process over several weeks and months.

And in the end, another book, Oh Yes!! TEA: Nepal Tea – You may notice I was a little stingy in posting photos to Facebook since all the very, very best will be published in my book and I do not want them to wander off on the internet.

Ta for now my dear tea friends.
