LEAFBERRI has expanded the market for its Kenyan tea in the United States following its participation as a first-time exhibitor earlier in March at the World Tea Conference + Expo.
LEAFBERRI was founded in 2018 by Kenyan native Dr. Yvonne Ochieng, whose great grandfather was introduced to tea farming by British missionaries who settled in the central highlands of Kenya in the early 1900s. “The climatic region, rich volcanic soils and high altitude made for a perfect environment for tea growing. My family has been growing tea since then,” said Ochieng, who also serves as LEAFBERRI’s owner and CEO.
Kenya is the third-largest producer of tea behind China and Sri Lanka and the largest exporter of black tea in Africa. Kenyan tea is known to have a unique flavor profile that is robust and smooth with a bright finish. It owes this special attribute to the region where it is grown – rich volcanic soils in the central highlands and Rift Valley Province.
“Tea is a major cash crop that plays an integral role in supporting small-scale farmers like my family,” Ochieng said. LEAFBERRI sources its tea directly from farmers, meaning it eliminates multiple stakeholders and allows LEAFBERRI to offer a fair market price, with the tea farmers benefiting directly through the purchase of the tea.
LEAFBERRI’s specialty is orthodox purple tea, a new tea variety with higher antioxidant content than green or black teas and lower caffeine levels than green tea. Purple tea is currently only grown in Kenya. LEAFBERRI also carries orthodox black and yellow Kenyan tea – both as straight teas and blends. All LEAFBERRI tea is non-GMO and naturally grown with no pesticide or chemicals sprayed on the leaves.
LEAFBERRI also supports Totocarebox, a Kenyan NGO working to prevent infant and maternal mortality rates in underserved communities by providing newborn babies and their moms a Totocarebox with enough supplies to carry them through the first 28 days of life. LEAFBERRI donates three percent of its monthly total tea sales to Totocarebox.
