NEWS: Indian Tea achieves highest ever value and unit price realization in exports in Rupee terms

Kolkata, May 10: Indian tea has achieved the highest ever value and unit price realization from exports in rupee terms both during the calendar year 2018 and financial year 2018-19. The value realization from exports was higher by Rs. 441.96 crores (8.73%) during the financial year 2018-19 as compared to the corresponding period last year, despite marginal decrease in the total volume exported. The unit price realization was also the highest ever during the financial year 2018-19, at Rs. 216.38 per kg, up by Rs. 18.97 per kg (9.61%) as compared to the corresponding period last year.

The total quantity of tea exported during the financial year 2018-19 was 254.50 million kgs valued at Rs. 5506.84 Crores. This shows a marginal decrease in quantity by 2.07 million kgs (-0.81%). However, India has earned foreign exchange to the tune of Rs. 441.96 Crores (8.73%) more than the corresponding period last year.

India has also achieved the highest ever tea production pegged at 1350.04 million kgs during the financial year 2018-19, surpassing the previous highest record of 1325.05 million kgs during 2017-18, which is an increase of 24.99 million kgs (1.89%) as compared to last year.

The tea production in North India (i.e. the states of Assam, West Bengal etc.) increased substantially in the months of June, July, August, September and March as compared to the corresponding period last year, resulting in increase of production in 2018-19. However, the tea production in South India (i.e. the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka etc.) decreased by 7.64 million kgs (-3.27%).

  • Iran by 9.83 million kgs (32%)
  • Bangladesh by 3.00 million kgs (650%)
  • China by 1.58 million kgs (18%)
  • Kazakhstan by 0.54 million kgs (6%)
