Camellia Sinensis is reinventing the tea experience at its all-new flagship boutique

Camellia Sinensis is thrilled to announce that its flagship boutique, on rue Emery in Montreal, will be completely remodelled to offer its customers a brand-new tea experience.

This remodel is designed to appeal to the senses including, of course, the most important one for tea lovers – taste. Inspired by the boutiques they have visited in Asia, the owners wanted to offer customers reasonably priced tasting sessions, where they could try several different styles and flavours of tea.

“Education is at the heart of our company. We are passionate about helping people to discover tea. So, it was an obvious step to include tasting opportunities at our boutique so that customers can better understand our products and make informed choices. Although online shopping dominates these days, it would be almost inconceivable to concentrate all our efforts on online platforms, because customers want to smell and taste the teas and feel supported in their decision-making process. As such, it was important to us to emphasize the sensory aspect and inject some soul into a physical space, something that has largely been abandoned since the beginning of the pandemic,” explained Camellia Sinensis’ co-owners, Hugo Americi and François Marchand.

This project had been in the works for a while, but the enforced closure of the tearoom adjoining the boutique during the pandemic ended up being a springboard to overhaul and expand the space to include a tea bar. “We also had the opportunity to purchase the building we have been using for more than 20 years. We jumped at the chance to embark on a major renovation and solidify our long-term vision,” they added.

Camellia Sinensis awarded the contract to redesign its Latin Quarter boutique – including furniture, lighting and storage – to multidisciplinary design firm Machine.

“When using an integrated design approach, each detail of the project and each way the space will be used are considered in relation to each other, from the physical space itself to the furniture it contains. This thread, from creating a new idea on the drawing board through to manufacturing the furniture in the workshop and staging it in the space, enables us to involve all the company’s disciplines and produce a coherent and unified project. It’s also an opportunity to enhance our creativity and expertise as a manufacturer thanks to the project’s unique details, such as the tea display wall, for which the entire design, including the storage containers used, was entrusted to our team,” said Marie-France Paquette, project manager at Machine.

The result was a more minimalist interior, with soothing shades of green, brushed brass and white oak, providing both a zen and exciting environment that makes you want to move around the space. The display containers rest on rods and appear to be floating in mid air. Retail items such as teapots and cups are now more accessible and within reach.

An express counter has been added too, where the most popular teas will be sold pre-packed and ready to buy.

“Our new concept will help us to develop the Camellia Sinensis brand internationally. In the tea industry, our tearoom was a tourist destination, almost a shrine. We believe that with this new concept, we will continue to stand out in the industry on a global level,” concluded the co-owners.

About CAMELLIA SINENSIS

In 1998, inspired by the tea houses he had visited in Europe, Hugo Americi opened the first Camellia Sinensis tea salon in Montreal. The passionate team grew quickly with three tea connoisseurs – Jasmin Desharnais, François Marchand and Kevin Gascoyne – joining the brand. Twenty years later, Camellia Sinensis now has three boutiques and a tea salon in Montreal and Quebec City. A global reference thanks to their unique criteria for selecting CS-certified teas, the four expert tasters visit gardens the world over. They meet with producers in order to import high-quality teas of exceptional taste, cultivated in healthy gardens where the products are respectfully grown.
